Vaso Bukvich Inducted - St. Louis 2000 |
Vaso Bukvich's inimitable style of prima playing propelled the Banat and Jugoslavia tamburitza orchestra into great popularity. Small in stature, but a giant when delivering his unforgettable music, this gentle man let his prima do his bidding with great success and satisfaction to the listening ear. |
Along with his brother Mirko, Vaso captivated audiences coast to coast, excelling in kolo dancing music. As early as 1924, the brothers Bukvich began recording on the old acetate discs. |
Like so many other titans of tamburitza music, Vaso is almost unknown to the new breed of tambura players. But today's tambura{i owe him a debt of gratitude, for it was men such as he that preserved and perpetuated our tamburitza heritage. |
This easy going soul is credited with the adage "Puno tamburasa a malo ljudi" (Plenty of tamburitza players, but very few men amongst them). Vaso was certainly a 'man amongst them', so highly thought of that another Hall of Famer helped to mark the end of an era at his death. At his cemetery rite, the great voice of Ted Popovich reverberated throughout the graveyard as Vaso was laid to rest. |
