Lubo Kolakovich Inducted - Los Angeles 1974 |
Lubo Kolakovich, a native of Los Angeles, California, started playing the tamburitza in 1938. Since then and up to the present time we can think of no one in the Los Angeles area who has taught more people to play this instrument than Lubo. |
In 1940 Lubo organized the Veseli Seljaci Tamburitza Orchestra and was its first instructor. The war years took him away for awhile from his beloved music avocation, but in 1956 Kolakovich was again busy with the tamburitza. He organized and instructed the Srpski Seljaci Orchestra, both senior and junior sections. The Srpski Seljaci, well known as a cultural group 'par excellence', had many concerts and spread love of the tamburitza throughout southern California. |
Work took Lubo up to Sacramento in 1963. Here he organized a tamburitza orchestra still playing as a part of the Serbian Church cultural program. A year later he organized an orchestra in Fresno. |
For the past ten years, Lubo Kolakovich has been teaching the tamburitza at St. Steven's Cathedral in Alhambra, California. At times he has three groups going at the same time, all of them able to perform well at concerts and for special occasions. |
For the past 35 years, Kolakovich has taught hundreds of young people to play the tamburitza, organized many orchestras, and has contributed a great deal to making the tamburitza a popular and beloved instrument, an expression of our fine culture. And all this was done gratis -- he never charged a cent for his instruction or organizational ability. |
Thank you Lubo, and also your good wife Doris, who was always there to help. Ziveli na mnogaja ljeta! |
