Balkan Life: An Ethnographic Exhibit

Extravaganza attendees are in for a special treat this year! There will be an exhibit of 51 ethnic costumes from Marvin Moehle’s personal collection. Marvin is well known throughout the world as a costume collector, especially costumes from the Balkan region. He often receives calls from people in the old country wanting information about family heirlooms or, perhaps, to donate to his superb collection.

Marvin decided on 51 costumes as this year is the 51st anniversary of the incorporation of the TAA. He wanted it to be a special tribute to the beginning of the second half century of the TAA at its birthplace, St. Louis! The TAA is thrilled to have Marvin’s exhibit, as it is indeed rare for anyone to view 51 authentic costumes in one place. Even some of the ethnographic museums in Europe often do not have that large of a collection.

Besides the costumes, Marvin is a wealth of knowledge on the history and evolution of the costumes in his collection. He is often called upon to give lectures at various folk camps, dance workshops and ethnic events. Marvin even has had a special exhibit at the world-renowned St. Louis Art Museum.

Although the exhibit will be open throughout Extravaganza weekend, Thursday evening (September 25th) from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. will host a special premiere and reception commemorating the opening of the exhibit. Cost is only $10. Be one of the first to see this exquisite exhibit and speak to Marvin up front and personal by checking: “Balkan Life: An Ethnographic Exhibit” on your order form. You won’t want to miss it!
